What is a sales receipt?

A sales receipt is proof that a customer has paid for goods or services. Unlike an invoice, which requests payment, a receipt confirms that payment has already been made.

Receipts are usually issued once the customer pays, and they should include key details such as:

  • Business name and contact details

  • Date of payment

  • Description of the goods or services sold

  • Amount paid and method of payment
  • A unique receipt number

Why sales receipts matter

  • They protect you in case of disputes about payment

  • They give customers confidence and a record for their accounts

  • They help you keep accurate books and prepare for tax reporting

  • They make your business look professional and trustworthy

Best practice when issuing receipts

  • Always provide a receipt as soon as payment is made

  • Use a numbering system to stay organised

  • Keep digital and paper copies for your records
  • Include payment method (cash, card, bank transfer) for clarity

  • Match receipts to invoices in your accounts to avoid confusion
